A Christmas Vacation. Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
While our Airstream is in Portland, Oregon at Ultimate Airstream being upgraded (we are adding a W/D combo and some storage.) We are spending a month in Jackson, Wyoming. Our VRBO rental is actually in Wilson, WY which is just between the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (Teton Village) and the town of Jackson.
The Jackson Hole Mountain resort, located in Teton Village has 2 weeks of holiday activities around Christmas and New Years. (They also have other events throughout the season but this time of year they host daily activities.) The mountain is overall busier than the weeks preceding and post the holidays. These apres-ski events make it an appealing time to visit, despite the crowds.
Our favorite activities so far have included the cookie decorating (although the cookies were a little hard to eat) and the sledding. The sledding time was funny. The hill is there all season but the event brings in a small crowd. As one fellow parent put it, "it is like human bowling." You have to be fast and on your toes as to not get taken out by a fellow sledder. Also, wear boots with grip, otherwise you will slide down the hill without a sled. Right next to the ski area is the ice castle.
For New Years there is the annual kids Glowworm Parade and the adult version, TorchLight Parade. Dress warmly. As long as your child is comfortable skiing the greens they can handle this event. My husband took our 3 yr old.
The resorts are all dressed up for the holiday season! (And of course the town of Jackson has lights up as well... oh and Santa in the square prior to the big day.) You will pay higher rates but the extra free activities won't leave you a dull moment to worry about that.
The area around Jackson and the mountain village are very special. You can visit Grand Teton National Park or your can go shopping in the downtown upscale shops. You can drive the pass to Idaho and be in the smalls towns just on the west side within an hour. Jackson has a wonderful children’s library and a indoor swimming pool. We stayed for a cold month but never ran out of things to do both inside and out.
*Oh, and a word of advice from my hubs... if you are a capable skier go up the mountain and stay on the upper runs. The lower lifts are the busiest.
