Cozumel, Mexico- Disney Cruise
On our Disney cruise Cozumel was our first port of call. I wanted to go out on our own and escape the typical cruise bubble so I started researching what else we could do during our time on the tiny island just off the coast of Mexico.
I ended up deciding to rent a Jeep and drive to Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. We had a bit of confusion about whether or not we would need peso's at first but the answer was NO! everywhere took American dollars or credit card.
My husband, Tyler, took a cab to the rental car location near the airport and picked up our reserved 4 door Jeep. (They had originally tried to give him a 2 door but we have 3 kids with us and their seats so that wasn't going to work.) When you get off the ship you are emptied into a shopping area. The kids and I (with our extended family) waited at the shopping plaza. Tyler called us when he got close and pulled over to pick us up. He parked in a lot reserved for tour agencies, but he just acted like he knew what he was doing and no one questioned him.
It was a short, beautiful drive to the Eco Park (about 40 mins.) Once there we paid our entrance fee in US dollars and were given a map. They have a beautiful beach, a light house, an overlook tower and an included boat tour. We ended up not having enough time to explore the whole park. We ate lunch at one of the restaurants in the park, played on the beach and then went on the included boat tour. Some of the cruise excursions take you to the Eco Park, but you don't get to explore on your own. The day we went the beach only had a handful of other people on it.
We had a 5-yr-old, 3-yr-old and under-1-year-old. With kids that little finding fun excursions is very difficult. This day worked out perfectly. I brought the infant bucket on the cruise, a bubble bum for the oldest and a ride safer vest for the middle child. My Beach Front Baby Wrap also saved me on the beach. (Discount code at the end if you are interested in getting one for your infant!)
Our drive back was quick and easy. We ended up turning in the car at the rental office closer to the cruise port and just walking back. There was a long line to get back on the boat, but it moved pretty quickly. The Mexican authorities checked our bags and looked for our cruise cards. Overall, it was a very easy day to be on our own.
